In August of 2006 the Lord laid on the hearts of the people of FBCA to become involved with the overwhelming need of AIDS orphans in Africa.  The very thought of the magnitude of the problem was staggering but we felt that God had a plan to use us in some small way.  Under the Lord’s leadership we joined with Buckner International and Bright Hope Ministries of Ethiopia to do whatever we could in that country. Ethiopia is a country of 80,000,000 people.  The average daily wage is $2 and many people exist on less.   The lack of available pure water, sanitation, medical & dental care, education and employment cause the people to struggle each day just to survive and raise their families.  Seeing that the challenge was too great for a single church, we sought out other churches in East Texas who would share the challenge.

The E-Team is made up of several East Texas Baptist churches.  They include FBC Athens, FBC Longview, FBC Corsicana, FBC Kilgore, FBC Marshall, Central BC Marshall, FBC Lufkin, Crossroads BC Marshall, FBC the Woodlands, FBC Palestine and Central BC Jacksonville. They have combined their resources to send teams of volunteers to serve the people of Ethiopia and share the Gospel of Christ.  We are blessed to have former IMB missionary Jim Palmer enlisted as the Strategic Coordinator for all of the E-Team work in Ethiopia.

Together we have constructed a school with classrooms, administration building, kitchen/dining room, teacher housing enclosed in a twenty acre fenced security campus.  400 elementary school students recieve quality education, nurshing meals, clean uniforms and weekly showers.  A staff of twenty-five teachers and caregivers maintain the facility.  This summer an evangelical church was started on the property.

Currently, 4-6 projects are scheduled each year.  Trips are designed to minister in specific ways.  They include: medical, dental, optical, youth outreach, children’s ministries, teacher training, repair/maintenance, construction, sanitation projects and water well drilling.  Two deep bore water wells have been drilled in the region and a third is scheduled for completion this fall.

Requirements for Participation . . .

1st Step:  Complete and return to the Mission Office the Short-Term Mission Team Applicationform. Forms are available in the Mission Office and the Global Café.

2nd Step: Give a photocopy of the name/photo page of your Passport to Steve Akin to confirm that your passport is current. If you do not have a Passport, applications are available in the Global Café, Mission Office or at the County Clerk’s Office in the main Courthouse.

3rd Step: Attend a workshop to develop your personal testimony using the “Telling Your Faith Story Using a Bible Story” method. Each person will be given an opportunity to share their testimony in various small group situations.

4th Step: Attend and participate in trip training meetings and work days to be scheduled.

Sharing a personal testimony is one of the most powerful tools a believer has for witnessing. Each team member will be given the opportunity to share their faith to small groups of people who need to hear the Gospel.

I invite you to come give yourself away for the Kingdom of God.  If you have questions, please speak to me personally.

Sincerely,

Steve Akin                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Minister of Missions   903-675-5135 #113
